MOTHER’S DAY WOLF LAKE HIKE GIVES RESIDENTS THE CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE THIS UNIQUE OLD GROWTH FOREST

Did you know that one of the last remaining old growth red pine forests is right here in Greater Sudbury? Residents will have the opportunity to see this unique ecosystem for themselves, and experience what Sudbury’s landscape used to be, on a Mother’s Day hike being organized by Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury, as a member of the Wolf Lake Coalition.

Naturalists Viki Mather, Franco Mariotti, and Dr. Peter Beckett will lead the hike and share their knowledge of this self-sustaining old growth red pine forest, where trees over 300 years old have been documented.

Thanks go to Wahnapitae First Nation for their generous donation, and participation in the hike. Thanks also to Wild Women Expeditions for their sponsorship.

Interest has been very high, with spots filling up quickly to come out for the hike. Already well-loved by hikers and canoeists, community support is high to see this area receive full protection. For this to happen, mining leases and claims must be allowed to lapse, so that they can be brought into the adjacent Chiniguchi Waterway Provincial Park.
