Sudbury Symphony Orchestra in “A Viennese New Year Celebration”


Sudbury, ON January 15, 2013: The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to welcome back to its stage renowned Conductor Brian Jackson for “A Viennese New Year Celebration,” February 2 at 8:00pm at Glad Tidings Church.

Paying tribute to the tradition of “Das Neujahrskonzert,” a concert of classical music that kicks off New Year’s Day morning in Vienna, the spirit of the Alps will be meet the big Nickel in this one night only performance. Broadcast around the world, last year’s Austrian concert reached an estimated audience of 50 million people in 73 countries. 

Following in this tradition, the Sudbury Symphony’s concert will feature music from the Strauss family, best known for their Blue Danube Waltz, and other Austrian composers. The SSO is honoured to welcome the dynamic vocal talents of baritone Timothy Richard and soprano Taylor Robertson to this performance who will perform operatic selections from much-loved favourites such as Die Fledermaus and The Merry Widow.

Recently retired as the Principal Pops Conductor of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, Maestro Jackson continues to perform alongside Orchestra London and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. A much sought-after conductor, he has also conducted the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, among others.

The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra will continue its waltz through Vienna with a gala on February 16th at Bryston’s on the Park. Entitled “Midnight & Mozart: An Austrian Affair,” this evening of live music, hosted by CBC’s Jessica Pope will feature live and silent auctions with items including signed sheet music by Paul Simon and Justin Bieber, a skating lesson with Canadian Figure Skating Champion Meagan Duhamel and much more.
