MEDIA RELEASE: Sudbury and the Ontario-wide Raise the Rates Week of Anti-Poverty Action, Oct. 14-20

Blog posts reflect the views of their authors.

Anti-poverty actions will be taking place in Sudbury and many other communities across the province during the week of October 14 to challenge plans to merge Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) and to demand real action on poverty from the Wynne Government. We will be demanding restoration of the vital Community Start Up and Maintenance Benefit (CSUMB), supporting the right of First Nations Communities to control delivery of Ontario Works (OW) and ODSP programs and calling for the raising of the minimum wage in Ontario to $14 an hour and social assistance rates by at least 55%. In place of the endless talk of this Government about 'poverty reduction' while those living in poverty continue to suffer we will be taking action. The specific concerns we are raising are the following:

*Restore the Community Start-Up and Maintenance Benefit (CSUMB) and until this is done maintaining CSUMB rates and policies for all Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative (CHPI) funding (this has different names in different areas).

*Stop the attacks on Disability (ODSP) Benefits

*Raise social assistance rates by 55% to bring them back to where they were in 1995.

*Raise the Minimum Wage Rate to $14 an hour and index it to the rate of inflation.

* Support the S-CAP 11 and supporters of Poverty Makes Us Sick (Kitchener-Waterloo) arrested for anti-poverty activism. Drop the charges.

In Sudbury a week of events and actions will be held including a province-wide Raise the Rates rally and march with people coming from across the province.

Friday October 18th 2pm Memorial Park – Free meal and anti-poverty march with a focus on restoring the CSUMB and ensuring in the meantime that CHPI maintains at least CSUMB rates and policies.

Saturday October 19th – People from across the province will be coming to Sudbury for a large Raise the Rates rally and march. The focus will be on defence of Disability Benefits from attack. Time and location TBA. We are hoping to arrange bus and van subsidization to get people to this event.
