Today, according to Jackie McVicar of the Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence (BTS) network, Guatemalan police have taken Crisanta Perez, from the village of Agel in San Miguel Ixtahuacan, into custody. Canadian gold mining company Goldcorp is operating in San Miguel. The reasons for Perez' capture are unclear, but could lead to more charges as she faces an outstanding warrant laid against her in 2008. She was also charged in 2009.

Perez, according to McVicar, "has constantly been attacked for speaking out against the environmental and health harms that mining is causing in her community. Crisanta gave birth only weeks ago and was at home in Agel, after being in hiding for several months, due to the repression and intimidations she was receiving."
