Thursday, September 6: Organizing Meeting for Raise the Rates Town Hall

Time: 6:30pm
Location: Labour Council Office, 109 Elm Street, second floor

The first organizing meeting for the October 10th Raise the Rates Town
Hall in Sudbury will take place at the Labour Council office, Thursday,
Sept. 6th at 6:30pm. The Labour Council office is at 109 Elm Street on
the second floor. It is basically across Elm from the Native Friendship
Centre. This is a wheelchair accessible location. Try to be there by
6:30pm if possible. After 6:40pm we will check the front door every 10
minutes to let people in. We already have John Clarke from the Ontario
Coalition Against Poverty and Carrie Lynn Poole from CUPE as speakers
for the Town Hall meeting and Elizabeth Richer from the North Shore
Tribal Council can attend on Oct. 10th.

The Raise the Rates campaign is a campaign sponsored by the Ontario
Coalition Against Poverty and CUPE Ontario that stands for major
increases in social assistance rates and increases in the minimum wage.
S-CAP fully supports this campaign. This fall Raise the Rates Town Hall
meetings are being organized across the province to build support for
this campaign. One major area of focus will be on opposition to the cut
to the Comnmunity Start Up Fund for people on social assistance.

Monday, September 10: Meeting of Sudbury Coalition Against Poverty

Time: 6:30pm
Location: ReThink Green, 176 Larch Street, back entrance

Matters to be discussed include ongoing direct action support work and a
town hall meeting about raising the  rates for social assistance and
raising the minimum wage. Everyone welcome. Children are welcome to
attend, or childcare support is available upon request at
sudburycap@gmail.com. ReThink Green is located behind Eat Local Sudbury,
so walk down the alley, and in the back door. Venue is wheelchair
accessible with advanced notice -- email us and we will make the
necessary arrangements.

S-CAP is a direct-action anti-poverty organization based in Sudbury,
Ontario, Canada. We provide direct-action support work assisting
individuals in their struggles with welfare and ODSP, housing,
employers, and others who deny people what they are entitled to in order
to meet their needs. In addition, we mount campaigns against and support
educational work about regressive government policies as they affect
working people and people living in poverty. We believe in the power of
people to organize themselves.

Wednesday, September 12: Freedom Tour 2012 (Sudbury)

Time: TBA
Location: TBA

The purpose of this event is to bring awareness to prohibition and it's
impact on society, specifically when it comes to medical legislation and
it's criminal realm. The Freedom tour makes their stop in Sudbury in
September. We will be hosting a day full of events (still to be
determined), to welcome Neil Magnusun to our city where he will engage
us in conversation about prohibition and the harms being caused by
flawed government policies.

Neil will be filing formal complaints with the police as he goes through
Canada spreading the word. He will also be speaking with the Mayors of
each city he visits to gather the real majority's opinion on
prohibition.
