On Monday December 17th Rainbow public elementary teachers, occasional teachers, and designated early childhood educators (DECEs) will stage a one-day strike, march and rally to continue sending the government a message that Bill 115 is severely impeding local collective bargaining.

They are inviting all labour affiliates to bring your flags and noise-makers and join in on the rally and march.

The march will begin at Tom Davies Square and follow the  planned  Rally and March Route.

There should be close to 800 ETFO Rainbow members participating in this Rally.

Monday, December 17: Support the S-CAP 11 in Court

Time: 9:30am
Location: Courtroom E, Sudbury Courthouse (155 Elm Street)

The next court appearance for for the 11 Sudbury Coalition Against Poverty (S-CAP) members and supporters who were arrested and charged with trespassing on Friday November 9th at the ‘Sudbury Emergency Homeless Shelter’ set up in Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci's office is Monday, December 17th at 9:30am at the courthouse at 155 Elm street, courtroom E. On November 9th following a request from Bartolucci the police arrested 11 people who were engaging in a peaceful protest against the Liberal government's cut to the Community Start-Up and Maintenance Benefit (CSUMB). Bartolucci refused to speak to the protestors in his office who he characterized as "rabble rousers."

Continuing the struggle against the cut to the CSUMB the S-CAP 11 are pleading not guilty to these charges. The Sudbury Coalition Against Poverty (S-CAP) is asking that people support the S-CAP 11 by showing up to the courthouse on Dec. 17th. Courtroom E will not fit many people, so some people may have to wait outside the courtroom. We will be moving outside the courthouse after the court proceedings are concluded for a media conference. The importance of maintaining the CSUMB will be stressed as well as the support the S-CAP 11 have received here in Sudbury and from across the province.

S-CAP is a direct-action anti-poverty organization based in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. We provide direct-action support work assisting individuals in their struggles with welfare and ODSP, housing, employers, and others who deny people what they are entitled to in order to meet their needs. In addition, we mount campaigns against and support educational work about regressive government policies as they affect working people and people living in poverty. We believe in the power of people to organize themselves.

Friday, December 21: Idle No More Sudbury

Time: 11am to 1pm
Location: Starting from Sudbury Community Arena (240 Elgin Street)

This will be a march or rally to show solidarirty with the #idlenomore national campaign.

Idle No More Mission Statement and Action Plan

Idle No More calls all people to join in a revolution which honors and fulfills Indigenous sovereignty and protects the land and water. Colonization continues through attacks to Indigenous rights and damage to the land and water. We must repair these violations, live the spirit and intent of the treaty relationship, work towards justice in action, and protect Mother Earth.

On December 10th, across Canada Indigenous peoples and allies stood in solidarity to assert Indigenous sovereignty and begin the work towards sustainable, renewable development. All Canadians will be affected by the continued damage to the land and water and we welcome Indigenous and non-Indigenous allies to join in creating healthy sustainable communities. We encourage youth to become engaged in this movement as you are the leaders of our future. There have always been individuals and groups who have been working towards these goals – Idle No More seeks to create solidarity and further support these goals. We recognize that there may be backlash, and encourage people to stay strong and united in spirit.

Plan of Action:

Support and encourage grassroots to create their own forums to learn more about Indigenous rights and our responsibilities to our Nationhood via teach-ins, rallies and social media. Build relationships and create understanding with allies across Canada. Take steps to contribute to building relationships with international agencies such as the UN to raise awareness to the conditions Indigenous people have been subjected to and assert our sovereignty in the international arena. Acknowledge and honor the hard work of all grassroots people who have worked, and continue to work towards these goals – you are our inspiration.
