Friday, January 18: Making a Living on 1.5 Acres: Techniques for Small
Scale Intensive Organic Market Gardening

Time: 7 pm to 9 pm
Location: Fromagerie Elgin (5 Cedar Street, entry from Elgin)

An informal evening presentation brought to you by the FarmON Alliance.

Admission free.

Since 2004, Jean-Martin Fortier and his wife have been making a good
living by growing on less than 1½ acres, on their farm Les Jardins de la
Grelinette in Quebec, just north of the Vermont border. Last year, they
sold more than $130,000 worth of vegetables, selling at two farmers’
markets and through their 140 member, 21-week CSA (Community Supported
Agriculture). How they do this is the focus of a book Jean-Martin
recently authored in French called "Le jardinier-maraîcher: manuel
d’agriculture biologique sur petite surface".

During this presentation, Jean-Martin will talk about their farm and
introduce the ins and outs of their production system – from use of
their walk-behind tractor and 30-inch permanent no-till bed system; to
how they have kept their operational costs low; to intensive crop
spacing that has allowed them to more than triple production over
average row system yields.

Jean-Martin’s explanation for their success is that rather than
concentrating on growing bigger, they’ve focused on growing better. He
is looking forward to sharing some of the strategies and techniques that
he and his wife have fine-tuned over the years, in order to create a
farm that is efficient, ecological and most importantly: profitable.

employers, and others who deny people what they are entitled to in order

educational work about regressive government policies as they affect
working people and people living in poverty. We believe in the power of

January 29 to January 31: Trans Health Connection Training

Time: All day
Location: For details of the Sudbury location please register with
Jordan Zaitzow at jzaitzow@rainbowhealthontario.ca or 416-324-4100
x5325.

Trans Health Connection is coming to Sudbury! Please spread the word to
colleagues who may  be interested.

Trans Health Connection - a project of Rainbow Health Ontario and
Sherbourne Health Centre - will be coming to Sudbury January 29th, 30th,
and 31st, to offer 3 days of comprehensive training for providers
looking to build clinical capacity in working with
trans/transgender/transsexual clients. We are inviting interested
providers, allies, and community members to register TODAY for this
exciting opportunity!

JAN 29: Introduction to Trans Cultural Competence
This session looks at language, terminology, and definitions, exploring
some of the assumptions we make in our day-to-day interactions with the
people around us. It provides a dynamic snapshot of colonial history of
trans, lesbian, gay and bisexual people, as well as an overview of the
general health care needs of trans clients. This session focuses on some
of the social determinants of health for trans communities, how to
recognize and address barriers to care, and how to work towards
providing a welcoming and respectful environment for trans clients
accessing general health care services.

JAN 30: Providing Trans-Related Clinical Care
This session focuses on providing holistic community-based
transition-related services to trans clients. It aims to guide
participants through assessment, monitoring, and follow-up for hormone
therapy (including navigating the "gender dysphoria" assessment, hormone
treatment protocols, treatment monitoring and health promotion). This
session also includes some considerations around providing social and
psychological support to clients and their families and friends, as well
as familiarizing with other available community referrals. This is a
clinical training largely directed at doctors and nurses, and open to
anyone interested in the information.

JAN 31: Surgery Overview, and Holistic Case Work
This session is a review and general look at different surgical options
for trans folks, including information about different procedures, as
well as what surgeries are offered where for Ontarians. This session
includes a segment offered by clinicians at the CAMH gender identity
clinic, on the process of getting surgery coverage through OHIP. This
day also includes clinical protocols and recommendations for preparing
for surgery, as well as providing post-operative medical care and
support. We additionally look at working with trans clients for whom
there may be additional health challenges, and developing partnerships
to enlarge the scope of services for trans communities.

If you are interested in attending any of these training days, please
contact project coordinator Jordan Zaitzow at
jzaitzow@rainbowhealthontario.ca or 416 324 4100 x5325 for more
details.

hope to see you there!

Thursday, March 14: Meeting of Grassroots: Sudbury's Media Collective

Time: 10am to 11am
Location: Environmental Resource Centre (176 Larch Street, back
entrance)

Everyone is welcome to join us for our next meeting, on Thursday,
February 14,  10 - 11am in the ERC (176 Larch, back entrance). We'll be
discussing our community roundtable-slash-membership campaign launch
event as well as other aspects of our new membership campaign and of
course, brainstorming story ideas.

Also, mark future meetings on your calendar, 10-11 am on the 2nd
Thursday of each month: March 14, Apr. 11, May 9, June 13 in the ERC.

Grassroots Sudbury Media is a working group of the The Media Co-op. We
are creating independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and
outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent
media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical
perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to
those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.

Sudbury's Media Collective Membership Drive -- Support Original
Grassroots Journalism in the North!

Grassroots: Sudbury's Media Collective is working hard to increase the
amount of grassroots journalism and other independent media in northern
Ontario, and we need your help to do it.

We have been around for almost two years, producing content, maintaining
media infrastructure, building awareness, and sharing skills. Our site
(http://www.mediacoop.ca/group/sudbury) is a place where local people
and local groups – particularly, we hope, people whose voices and
stories are often marginalized – can publish media releases, event
notices, musings about important questions, rants about issues of local
concern, video clips, photo essays, interviews with interesting
Sudburians, and diverse forms of grassroots journalism. As a working
group of The Media Co-op, we link Sudbury with local collectives
supporting and producing grassroots journalism across the country.

In addition to publishing those kinds of content on our site, our top
priority is getting more people interested and able to create grassroots
journalistic pieces that will give a voice to people and stories that
you won't find in the mainstream media. Many people want to write, but
they aren't quite sure how, or they don't feel able to take the time
that it requires. To help people overcome some of those barriers, we
want to be able to pay local writers for local, original, journalistic
content, and to fund events and training sessions that will continue our
efforts to support emerging writers. We hope to raise $2000 per year to
allow us to reach these goals.

To raise that money, we are asking people in Sudbury (and beyond!) who
value independent media to buy memberships in Grassroots: Sudbury's
Media Collective. A one-year membership can be obtained for $25 or $15,
and we encourage those who are able to do so to include an additional
donation as well. We have a big event in the works to formally launch
our membership drive in a couple of months, but in the meantime buying a
membership is as easy as downloading the PDF membership form here
(http://www.mediacoop.ca/sites/mediacoop.ca/files2/mc/grassroots_membersh...), filling it out, and sending it in.

Becoming a member can mean what you want it to mean – it does not commit
you to any other activity. Of course, you are more than welcome to
participate in meetings, to come to events, to get involved in curating
the site, and to help with promotions. If you are on Facebook, you can
go to our page (http://www.facebook.com/GrassrootsMediaCollective) and
'like' it to keep track of what we're up to and to easily share material
that we publish. We would also be happy to notify you by email about
upcoming events and featured content on the site. And if you are
thinking of getting involved in writing or producing multimedia content
for the site, the membership form linked above has the basics of how to
do that, or you can also email us at grassrootssudburymedia@gmail.com
and we will answer any questions you have.

Most importantly, though, your membership itself is an important form of
support for the mission of creating independent media in the North that
speaks to issues and outlooks of concern to our communities and provides
an avenue for people to gain critical perspectives on important issues.

Join today and help us grow the capacity for grassroots journalism in
Sudbury!
