Monday, January 28: Idle No More Sudbury - #J28

Time: 4pm to 6pm
Location: starting from Tom Davies Square, 200 Brady Street

This is a march in support of the Idle No More Global Day of Action and in support of Chief Spence. Anyone who is generally concerned about increasing government & banking corruption, erosion of rights, and environmental destruction is encouraged to come out!

Idle No More began in part as opposition to omnibus Bill C-45 which has not been repealed. Until the government stops this Bill which eliminates the protection of 95% of Canadian waterways - Idle No More will continue. Most Sudburians and Northerners, Native and non-Native, appreciate the natural world around us, in someway or another. We must stand up against the all out assault on nature by industry and government while we still can. Re-peal Bill C-45 and all other legislation that is harmful to the greater public. For example, Bill 115 which is clearly an attack on Unions, just ask any teacher you know.

We will gather in the lobby of Tom Davies Square for 4pm. We will begin with the Jingle Dress Danace which symbolizes healing. Healing of the nation to nation relationship, healing to environment, and healing of people. We will then march on Minto to Van Horne @ Paris, to Paris @ Elm, and finish Elm @ Pine which is N'Swakamok.

We will have a short presentation on Idle No More and a meal/coffee/tea.

Following the event will be the usual Monday night Social with drumming and great company.

Start spreading the word. Let's heal the Earth and her people. :)

Friday, February 1: Eat Local Sudbury Musical Fundraiser

Time: 9pm to 2am
Location: The Townhouse Tavern, 206 Elgin Street
Cost: $10 at the door

Friday, February 1st - The Havocs, Little Sir Echo, Bad Policy, Jessy Brunette- Fundraiser and Awareness raiser for Eat Local grocery and store - $10.00 at the door.

Tonight we raise money for Eat Local Sudbury. ABOUT EAT LOCAL SUDBURY Eat Local Sudbury Co-operative is a grocery store and distributor that connects eaters with producers. Our store primarily sells produce from farms within a 150 miles radius of Sudbury, secondly from the rest of Ontario. The Co-op serves as a hub for consumers and producers.

Increasing your diet to include delicious locally produced food is a great way to reduce the human impact on the environment by reducing food miles. A local diet is often healthier by decreasing the amount of processed food and substituting those products with fresh fruits and vegetables that are picked when ripe. Economically you will be supporting local producers that live in our own community rather than large multinational corporations that often use socially and environmentally unfriendly practices.

Who is Eat Local Sudbury Co-op? Consumers or eaters, as we call them, and producers who have become members of the co-operative. We are a co-operative that is run by members for the benefit of members and the greater community. Eat Local Sudbury is a not-for-profit co-operative. All profits are re-invested in the grocery store and programming to meet the need of the community and to support our local food system.

Everyone is welcome to join us for our next meeting, on Thursday, February 14,  10 - 11am in the ERC (176 Larch, back entrance). We'll be discussing our community roundtable-slash-membership campaign launch event as well as other aspects of our new membership campaign and of course, brainstorming story ideas.

Also, mark future meetings on your calendar, 10-11 am on the 2nd Thursday of each month: March 14, Apr. 11, May 9, June 13 in the ERC.

Grassroots Sudbury Media is a working group of the The Media Co-op. We are creating independent media in the North, to speak to our issues and outlooks on our communities as well as the world around us. Independent media provides an avenue for people who are wishing to gain critical perspective on the issues that matter most to us, and to give a voice to those people and stories that you won't find in the mainstream media.
