Thursday, February 9: Opportunity for input to the Commission on Quality Public Services and Tax Fairness (A Notice from the Social Planning Council)

While the Drummond Report has not yet been released there is much talk about what it contains and warnings and rumors that we will be experiencing painful cuts to health care, education, and social services. This will of course have a significant impact on the services we deliver in community and likely will impact those who already suffer from the inequities of a system that is so unbalanced.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) along with the Public Services Foundation of Canada (PSFC) are hosting a Commission on Quality Public Services and Tax Fairness and are holding public input sessions.

They will be in Sudbury on February 9 and will provide an opportunity for all citizens to make submissions, through.

1. Public Hearings:  these take the form of community, provincial or national experts making deputations on studies and experiences involving the value of public services and ways to achieve tax fairness. Hearings are open to the public and media. This opportunity will happen from 1-4 p.m.

2. Town Hall Forum:  Town Hall forums are open to the public and the public is encouraged to attend and be heard about their experiences of public services as a service provider or service user. This opportunity will happen between 7-9 p.m.

Both events will happen at the new Steelworkers hall.

Gardening and Farming to Develop Heart-Filled Human Capacity with the Land

We have been gardening and farming on Manitoulin Island since 2003, growing nourishing foods and cultivating vibrant community connections in and for the region around us.

We are located at the base of the Niagara Escarpment below McLean's Mountain in Little Current, where we grow over 30 different kinds of vegetables using organic and Biodynamic practices for CSA, farmers' market, and some restaurant and co-op distribution.

In 2009 we began milling fresh stone-ground flours onsite from cereal grains grown here on the farm. Currently we offer some great fresh Rolled Oats, along with true whole-grain Red Fife wheat, rye, and oat flours (we are planning for whole spelt flour, as well as old-fashioned buckwheat flour with the 2011 harvest).

In the spring of 2011 we're also beginning to experiment with making some of our saved seeds available for purchase (starting with some beans and tomatoes).

Our community involvement keeps us inspired and is a central component of our work

Mayworks Sudbury: Call for Participants!

Myths and Mirrors is partnering with local community members, workers, unions and artists to help bring to Sudbury the very first annual May Works. May Works, founded in 1986 and held in many cities across Canada, is a multi-disciplinary arts festival that celebrates working class culture.

An important element of this festival will be a community art project. THIS IS AN OFFICIAL CALL OUT to ANYONE who is interested in participating in a community visual art project dealing with the issues of work. What does your work mean to you? What are your hopes and desires for your work? What struggles does your work, or lack there of, present you?

Mayworks' artistic vision is specifically guided by our equity policy that recognizes the systemic discrimination and injustices faced by equity-seeking groups, and designates women, First Nations people, people of colour and queer-identified people as being disadvantaged in our society. (Mayworks website)

We encourage those of you in Sudbury who have faced discrimination in the work sphere to come and share your story through the collaborative process of community art.

Please contact us if you are interested in participating. Soon we will hold our first meeting. Artists and non artists are welcome to participate. Email, facebook or call. sarahkg@mac.com or 705-507-2340 to keep in contact about our first and subsequent meetings.

check out May Works official website for more info on what other cities are doing. www.mayworks.ca

PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE ALSO LOOKING FOR ARTWORK WITH LABOUR AS ITS THEME. ARTISTS PLEASE CONTACT SARAH TO SUBMIT WORK FOR THE FESTIVAL EXHIBIT.
