The Media Co-op is looking for interns!

Hi everyone!

We're currently looking for two people interested in interning with the Media Co-op to work with us over the summer: one editorial & publishing intern, to be based in Montreal, and a web intern, based anywhere in Canada.

A bit about who we are:

The Media Co-op is a national web & print news outlet that aims to provide accurate, critical coverage that is accountable to its readers and the subjects it tackles. Canada's first national media cooperative, we have local coops in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver and publish the bimonthly newsmagazine, The Dominion. We are online at http://mediacoop.ca and http://dominionpaper.ca.

And here's the description of who we're looking for:

1. Web Outreach Intern

Love all things web? News junkie? Big on social justice and independent media?

The Media Co-op (http://mediacoop.ca) is looking for a new web outreach intern.

You'd be working with us to manage our website at http://mediacoop.ca, communicate with our community through Facebook and Twitter, send out our bi-weekly email newsletter and share articles with other organizations across Canada. You'll also have the opportunity to get experience writing and editing for the web.

A virtual position (you can be based anywhere in Canada), you'll get real experience in developing the web presence of a national, grassroots co-operative news network (possibility of working in-office if you are in Montreal).

We're looking for someone:

-enthusiastic for both the web and journalism

-familiar with social media tools like Facebook and Twitter but looking for more experience

-with strong English-language writing skills (knowledge of French and other languages an asset).

This internship would last three months, starting in mid-May, and would require approximately 8 hours of your time per week. This is an unpaid internship, but we are open to structuring it so you can receive academic credit.

To apply, please send your CV and a brief (max. 300 words) introductory email explaining why you are interested in this internship to info@mediacoop.ca by May 10th 2011 with the subject line Web Internship. Only those selected for interviews will be contacted.

  • passionate about writing, editing and the news?

  • inspired by social justice and grassroots organizing?

  • looking for a different experience from corporate news organisations?

  • looking for experience with a monthly national publication and news website?

Editorial and publishing interns with the Co-operative will have a chance to gain experience in all aspects of a print and online news outlet, including:

-copy editing & writing

-blogging and posting online

-participating in editorial meetings

-layout & design

-fundraising & circulation.

Specific tasks will be worked out with interns based on interests and actual staffing needs.

We're looking for someone:

-Passionate about journalism, writing and editing

-Strong belief in social justice and using media for social change

-Willing to work as part of a team

-Proficient in written and spoken English (other languages an asset)

-Familiarity with word-processing and spreadsheet software (Open Office, etc), desktop publishing (Indesign, Photoshop) and online media tools (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr) an asset, but not required

To apply, please send us your CV and a short email (max. 300 words) explaining why you would like to intern at the Media Co-op by May 10th, 2011. Internships will begin in late May 2011 at our office located in Montreal, QC.

While we are currently unable to pay interns, we are willing to structure the internships to meet course-credit needs and make sure the experience is enriching and fun. Internships run a minimum of 3 months.

Please note: Interns must be located in Montreal for the duration of their internship.

Send your emails to info@mediacoop.ca. Only those selected for interviews will be contacted. Please include INTERNSHIP in the subject line.
