Call out for Court Support and Media Attendance

We Want Justice For Our Communities, Not Police Impunity!
Attend the Supreme Court of Canada on Friday April 19th, 2013 (9 a.m.)

On Friday, April 19th, 2013, the Schaeffer and Minty families will face off against police interests one last time as the matter of lawyer vetting of police notes goes to the Supreme Court of Canada. Members of the public are always permitted to attend court proceedings. This is a call out for respectful court support. Help show the families, the media and the public that there is much interest in and support for an end to unaccountable policing.  Help report on this important case.

In November, 2011, the Ontario Superior Court of Appeal released its decision in the Schaeffer/Minty case.  In the unanimous decision, Ontario’s highest court determined that the law prohibited police officers from postponing handing in their notes or have their notes vetted by police association lawyers.  Police notes must be written independently and contemporaneously in order to be trustworthy and officers must uphold their duty to the public interest, rather than any private interest.

Police interests were unsatisfied with the decision and will bring their case and two Ontario families who had loved ones killed by police to the Supreme Court of Canada on Friday, April 19th, 2013.
