Senate Page disrupts Throne Speech

Ottawa/- During the reading of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s throne speech today, a young page was yanked from the Senate Chamber as she tried to hold up a stop sign placard reading  “Stop Harper.”
“Harper’s agenda is disastrous for this country and for my generation,” Brigette Marcelle says. “We have to stop him from wasting billions on fighter jets, military bases, and corporate tax cuts while cutting social programs and destroying the climate. Most people in this country know what we need are green jobs, better medicare, and a healthy environment for future generations.”
Brigette Marcelle, 21 and a recent graduate from University of Ottawa, has been a Page in the Senate for a year, but realized that working within parliament wouldn’t stop Harper’s agenda.
“Contrary to Harper's rhetoric, Conservative values are not in fact Canadian values. How could they be when 3 out of 4 eligible voters didn’t even give their support to the Conservatives? But we will only be able to stop Harper's agenda if people of all ages and from all walks of life engage in creative actions and civil disobediance,” she says.
“This country needs a Canadian version of an Arab Spring, a flowering of popular movements that demonstrate that real power to change things lies not with Harper but in the hands of the people, when we act together in our streets, neighbourhoods and workplaces.”

Free Speech

I'm so proud of our youth!  Right on!  Keep speaking out for what's right!

Brigette DePape (Marcelle)

I applaud her actions and totally agree w/what she silently said.

Hopefully this is but a

Hopefully this is but a 'sign' of things to come.

I think you mean, former

I think you mean, former senate page...

Bridgette Marcelle, former page

I guess the eyes see what they want to see.

Bridget Marcelle

I looked up "callow" in my dictionary, and Bridget's picture appears -- pigtailed and angry.

It would be callow to think

It would be callow to think that our system is working. Wise or courageous would be a more apt way to describe her actions.

That's funny, I looked up

That's funny, I looked up "Rick Bonsteel" in the my dictionary and it had a picture of a shrewd, cynical, ignorant old man. The entry read, "Cold, callous, spiteful, and completely out of touch with the world. Once knew what it meant to care about others but has long since forgotten what it feels like to stand for anything decent. Also a bit of a jerk."

Ha, playground name calling is fun! Thanks for bringing it back, Rick.

That's funny, I looked up

That's funny, I looked up "jerkwad" online, and there was a great big picture of "Rick Bonsteel". That's ok, you can go back to playing with your sorry self and fantasizing about people who have REAL BALLS. Bridget Marcelle ROCKS! What a brave and intelligent young woman, more power to her and others like her!

'Harper's' government as he prefers Parliament Hill to be known

Bridgette doesn't need to be a Rhodes Scholar to know what she's talking about.  And Harper is FAR from ...the best 'we' have!!

I do not want civil unrest and Arab spring, if she understood the political system they didn't get the majority of votes but they got more than anyone else.  Harper and the conservatives aren't the best but they are the best we have.  Liberals and NDP (orange bloc) are not representative of Canada.  Harper is not the devil as many people seem to believe he is pretty smart and I am proud that he has stood up for Israel and how he conducts himself on the world stage.

Guttsy gal

Good for her. Guttsy gal. I think we will see more of Bridget. I also believe there are many Bridgets out there, young and old, who are wanting to do pretty much what she did. I believe she has a lot of support behind her. She cetainly got attention to her message. She did loose her job but I guess that was to be expected.

I, like her, don't like the so called Harper majority ,when in fact he did NOT get the majority of votes in the country. The numbers speak for themselves. The "majority" of those who voted did NOT vote for his so-called "majority "government.

Since I was a kid, and I'm 60 now, I have always heard it said that "Tory times are tough times" and I believe we are about to see a prime example of  tough times under "The Harper Government".

You get what you vote for "they" say. But in this case we are not getting what WE the "majority" voted for . We are only getting what Harper wants. And thats scary.

Protest coming up

Hopefully the first of a series, here's the link to the event planning a gathering of like-minded people to support Brigitte's call for serious action and change in this decaying state that was once a democracy:

(Planned on Saturday, June 11th, from 1 to 4pm, on Parliament Hill)

Just a young girl who has

Just a young girl who has never had a real job and never paid real taxes.

Full of idealistic socialist utopia :)

"...3 out of 4 eligible voters didn’t even give their support to the Conservatives" , using the same rethoric: insignificat number of Canadians gave Liberals support, and fanatic separatists from QC got kicked out, Greens have so low support that cameras should not even be pointed towards Liz May of Green.

Conservatives has the closest program to Candian values from all political parties right now. They have chance to pull Canada up from the mud LIberals and socialists put it during last 10 years or so.

Kids at the university live in utopia and in isolaiton from the real world. They have no clue how hard is to do busines these days, how hard is to support family when costs of living are increasing and tons of  $$ is wasted by Liberals (such as eHealth scandal, green been, wind mills, etc...).

When kids get a real job, start paying real taxes and have to support themselves without $$ coming from mom and dad, thay will understand that Conservative program do have much better chance to improove economy than Liberal waste and NDP utopia.

The point is that no

The point is that no political party received a significant mandate from the population - and under our current system it rare it ever that any have. And yet the Harper Conservatives believe that they have a mandate to implement every policy they can dream of because they have the majority of seats.

This is not a misunderstanding of our political system - it is a much clearer understanding of the limits and faults of our political system and the sham of one political party ruling with near impunity for 4 years. Brigette did no hold up a sign saying "vote liberal!" or "vote NDP", so to say that she values one of those parties any more than the Conservatives is to make significant assumptions.

Likewise, Brigette never said "eHealth was great!" But many, many people like her - including people who work, have families and pay taxes - are saying, we do not want to fund more prisons and more prisoners, we do not want to pay for unnecessary fighter jets, we do not want to cover the funding gaps left by corporate tax cuts.

Just because someone is young does not mean that others do not share her opinion or that she should be easily dismissed.

But this is exactly what one

But this is exactly what one can say about situation in parlament before elections. Libs and socialists were in oposition but did not create government because did not get any mandate from Canadians during previous elections. Conservatives got bigger support from Canadinas than any other party.

Canadina clearly said: "no more LIberals", "no more fanatic separatists" and they voted for Conservatives.

Looks like Canadina got tired with Liberal and socalist mentality of destructing private business and spending $$ oin things people do not want. Overblown welfare system would easily broke Canada and Conservatives have chance now to put economical deveopment on strainght road.

Canda could not aford anymore uncontrolled social spendings run by Libs, uncontrolled immigration flow that makes fed. budget loose on average $6K on each new immigrant,  uncontrolled enforcement of "green" ideology, etc.....

Although we still live under post-trudeupian shadow, Candians seems to wake up and reject imposed ideology that does not represent anymore traditional democratic values of this country.

Let's have hope Conservatives will manage to fix all the damage done by Liberals and socialists.

"Real Job"

I'm pretty sure being a page in the senate chamber is a real job. I'm pretty sure she got fired for speaking her mind. I'm pretty sure she paid taxes at her "real job". Jonathan I'm pretty sure you're ageist. I also had a "real job" at the age of twelve and put myself through university . I'm pretty sure you have tunnel vision. Or no vision at all.

could you be any more

could you be any more sexist/ageist? i can't wait for your generation to DIE OFF so we will have the time and space to fix all of your ugly, disastrous mistakes. please do it soon.

Bridget Stood up for Canada

Bridget's Marcelle's one-person protest was not just an act of civil disobedience. She stood up for Canada

First, her protest showed pure bravery. She risked a lot more than the average Canadian activist is willing to put on the line for what they believe in. She knew that the protest would be regarded as a breech of security, and an affront to the hallowed traditions of the senate chamber. She knew she’d be fired from her job. But she protested any way.

Second, Bridget took a stand against Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his Conservatives at a time some pundits are beginning to tell us Harper harbors no hidden agenda. She's reminded us all that the fight for Canada and its democratic values, institutions and traditions did not end on May 2. It has only begun.

Young kid, has never had a

Young kid, has never had a real job and never paid a real taxes. Studying at UofO in utopia isolated from real world and geting $$ from mom and dad..

"Contrary to Harper's rhetoric, Conservative values are not in fact Canadian values. How could they be when 3 out of 4 eligible voters didn’t even give their support to the Conservatives?" - what a political bigotry! On the same line: Liberals, Greens and fanatic separatists from BQ got support next to NULL. Conservative program is the closest one to Canadian values.

Conservatives have chance to pull Canadian economy from the deep mud it was pushed by LIberals.

When kids get a real job and see how hard is to start a business or support family when living expenses get unbearable they will understand how utopian is socialist propaganda broadcasted by Libs and NDP, not even mentioning unsignificant noise from Greens.

Brave Page

Thank you Brigette! We are now Unified.... and it diodn't take one spoken word!!!

Lone voice in Parliament

This picture of a young girl standing silently with a "Stop Harper" sign in Parliament reminded of another picture -- a young man standing silently in front of a tank in Tiananmen Square.

Brigette! Hero!

Fabulous action! Thank you! THIS is the kind of Canadian we need a lot more of!
Stand up and quit letting them walk all over us with their fundamentalist politics.
I can't for the life of me figure how a lying, conniving, money-wasting, megalomaniacal, malevolent bully was voted in to power yet again (with only a fraction of the votes!)
And what's worse, he now has a majority! If more people don't make an effort and take stands as Brigette did, we can kiss our "great" country goodbye!

Greatly inspired,

Greg Gardner

I wish I had something brillant to say, but

Stop Harper

says it all.

Spare us the partisan crap ...

Safe to say the youth today aren't really talking about partisan politics anymore.

You old farts need to wrap your minds around that in a hurry.

Harper is just the most blatant manifestation of the same old pandering to private interests that has almost completely eroded whatever sad excuse for a democracy Canada may or may not have once had.

Much of the criticism directed at Harper might get co-opted by the other parties, but it's coming from a much broader base of general dissent, especially with the younger crowd.

Any kid developing a political consciousness today better start practicing direct action and disruption because these are the only means of real democracy available to them. This tired old party system wouldn't know how to represent the interests of the youth even if it wanted to. I don't even RECOGNIZE the legitimacy of the canadian state, so why would I vote?

Better off blocking traffic in the street, screaming obscenities at the cops ... and yet - I'm excited about the future!

page is fired....Brigette DePape Marcelle

I read what Bridgette did, both in the Toronto Star and online and have to say, I do agree w/ a degree.  With Canadians now in Libya, they are protecting our country from being attacked, although....most of what's going on in the Middle (Near) East is directed at the U.S. but....we also need a major Canada-wide improvement of our health care and funding for social programs and improving our environment, not destroying it!

Anyway, Bridgette, I am really proud of what you do, despite your being fired.

Good and bad

I have to agree with officials that this wasn't the right way/place to do this.

But I also have to agree with you that democracy is sick in Canada, and that something has to be done.

Congratulations for living by your ideas and daring to do what you did. Way to go.

I think I'm in love.

Canada hasn't been a democracy for almost ten years. The moment we started caring more about the welfare of multinational corporations than we do about the welfare of our own countrymen, we gave up our claim as a democracy.

We are America under a commonwealth.

Just another Corporate Oligarchy of corruption, feeding our youth into the chasm between the lower and upper class, with no vision for the future..
