On October 14th, 2013, approximately 25 G.O.A.L. (Grassroots Ontario Animal Liberation) activists held a anti-captivity demonstration from 10am until 1pm at African Lion Safari in Hamilton, ON.

Animal rights groups such as HALT (Hamilton Animal Liberation Team), KOALA (Kitchener Ontario Animal Liberation Alliance), and others joined in a show of solidarity against the for-profit captive animal industry.

Safari patrons in the picnic area were interrupted by protestors on megaphones who could be heard inside the park despite African Lion Safari blaring their jingle over the PA system in an endless loop.  Leaflets condemning use of bullhooks (which are pointed staffs used to train elephants by hitting and inflicting pain in sensitive areas) were also distributed to hundreds of cars entering the facility.

Protestors claim the animals are stolen from the wild or are bred into a life of captivity.  They also claim the animals are kept in sheds for several months of the year during the off season.  After some discussion with demonstrators, one zoo patron was quoted as saying “I understand what you are saying, I’ve been here twice but I would definitely not come back.”

This demonstration was part of The Festival for the Animals which also included a march and mass rally at Marineland amusement park and an anti-captivity conference held at Brock University on the preceding days.

More demonstrations at African Lion Safari are planned for 2014.
