Special Resolution to amend the definition of Contributor Member in Media Co-op Bylaws

Media Co-op Updates

To be presented at the Media Co-op's 2011 AGM

WHEREAS the current definition of CONTRIBUTOR MEMBER of the Co-op in the bylaws does not adequately account for the contributions of all contributors and

WHEREAS the lack of specificity of the current definition of CONTRIBUTOR MEMBER could allow for abuse of this membership category,

BE IT RESOLVED to amend the definition of CONTRIBUTOR MEMBER in the Co-op's bylaws to the following:

Contributor Members.
a. Each Contributor Member must have done one of the following:
i) made two contributions to The Dominion prior to becoming a member (a contribution to The Dominion includes but is not limited to photography, illustration, comics, editing, copy editing and writing), at least one of which was made within the past year; or
ii) contributed four editor-reviewed posts to any Media Co-op Local website in the past year; or
iii) been recognized by a Local Media Co-op editorial committee as having contributed eight hours or more work to the Co-op.
b. Each Contributor Member must be approved in a motion passed by the Board and pay an annual membership fee as set by the board of directors.

BACKGROUND

Last year at our AGM we changed our bylaws to include Local Media Co-op contributors in our definition of a contributing member, which until then only included contributors to The Dominion.

Currently, the bylaws read:

Contributor Members.
a. Each Contributor Member must have either:
i) contributed to two issues of the Dominion prior to becoming a member. A contribution to the Dominion includes but is not limited to: photography, illustration, comics, editing, copy editing and writing; or
ii) contributed four editor-reviewed posts to any Media Co-op local website in the past year.
iii) Local Media Co-op editorial committees can designate people as contributor members
b.To maintain membership, Contributor Members must contribute to one issue of The Dominion per year.
c. Each Contributor Member must support the objectives of the Co-op and pay an annual membership fee as set by the board of directors.

The changes:

-- Under a.: from "either" to "done one of the following" for clarity.

-- Under a. i): from "contribute to two issues of the Dominion" to "two contributions to the Dominion"--so if someone contributes two stories to one issue, they can claim membership status.

-- Remove b. from the original definition and move it to be included under a. i), where it belongs.

-- Change the wording of a. iii) for consistency and to give a more explicit requirement for being considered a contributing member. a. iii) exists for Media Co-op contributors who contribute in ways other than posting on the site (organizing, tech, layout, broadsheet distro, etc), Local editorial collectives must submit a list of contributor members prior to a GM or other process that requires voting by members (participatory budget, etc).

-- Change c. (now b.) from "Each Contributor Member must support the objectives of the Co-op" to "Each Contributor Member must be approved in a motion passed by the Board." This will be a bi-monthly formality that could be important in the event of a rogue Local or group claiming to be a Local stacking an AGM with members they have appointed under a. iii).
