The Dominion Newspaper Cooperative, a grassroots Canadian newspaper and website that has been publishing since May 2003, has entered into a new phase for the Co-op - and for journalism in Canada. In February 2009, we launched our first 'local' in Halifax.
The Halifax Media Co-op is a member-funded media cooperative that aims to combine participatory, democratically produced media with professional standards. Later on the same year, we launched the The Vancouver Media Co-op, which gained a large and dedicated following during and after the 2010 Olympics.
Later in 2010, The newly formed Toronto Media Coop produced extensive coverage of the G20 Summit.
In 2011, the Montreal Media Coop was officially launched.
Our approach combines community organizing and online collaboration to create a financially sustainable, independent, member-run Media Co-op that spans the country.

We are currently building a base of sustainer support in Halifax. Sustainers are people who give a certain amount a month (usually $20) to support local, independent journalism.
At a time when the media is in crisis in Halifax (and across the country) sustainers support a funding model that does not rely on advertising or government spending. By the fall of 2010 we hope to have 50 sustainers in Halifax. This will enable us to commission four professional articles per month and pay a part time organizer to keep things moving and continue to grow this local news cooperative. Please consider becoming a sustainer, or contact us to find out more at hillary|at|mediacoop.ca
More on the Vancouver Media Co-op
The VMC is the work of a vibrant collective of journalists, video ninjas, radio denizens, and graphic designers. We cover events around the city, and investigate issues important to social movements and ignored by corporate media. As a collective, we put out a bi-weekly broadsheet called Balaclava! and use our wide range of skills and experience to produce videos that tell the stories of our city.
If you'd like to support the VMC, please consider becoming a sustainer. If you'd like to become a member of the VMC's collective, email us at vmc at mediacoop dot ca or call 604 630 6864 for more information.
More on the Toronto Media Co-op
The TMC was formed in early 2010 and burst onto the international scene with hard hitting, around the clock coverage of the G20 Summit, which took place during the summer in Toronto. TMC members have produced and broken stories that have been picked up by mainstream news organizations, and provided in-depth coverage on topics such as policing, resistance to austerity measures, Labour issues and city politics. Our print publication, The Spoke, comes out periodically and we've recently begun a bi-weekly news roundup feature.
If you'd like to support or contribute to the TMC, please consider joining as a sustainer or contributor, or coming to one of our regular story meetings.
