The United States is undergoing a United Nations review for human rights violations and will have to answer the question: Has the United States lived up to its treaty obligations?

The National Jericho Movement and Malcolm X Center for Self Determination say, “No!”  Leaders from both organizations will speak in Geneva before the Committee Against Torture (CAT).   They want the inhumane treatment of imprisoned Black, Latino, and Native American human rights defenders from the 1960s; political activists, including today’s environmental activists; and other political prisoners highlighted on the global human rights agenda.

“From the torture of solitary confinement to denial of medical attention, and blanket denial of parole; our political prisoners are suffering.” Jihad Abdulmumit will outline ongoing U.S. abuses against U.S. political prisoners.

Efia Nwangaza will detail the campaign’s history. “The machine mass incarcerates youth of color at rates so great they may impact the ability of African American people to experience natural increase which is tantamount to genocide.” she said.

Jericho and the Malcolm X Center have found no relief in the courts. These groups, and many others, now support the formation of a special South Africa style Truth and Reconciliation Commission process and an International Human Rights Lobby to target United Nations members. “It is our desire that member nations hold the United States of America accountable for breeching the Convention to End Racial Discrimination (CERD) to which it is a signatory,” said Ms. Nwangaza.  The Convention is a United Nations treaty signed by the U.S. in 1966.  The CERD Committee tracks U.S. adherence with the treaty.

“Africana communities across the United States protest the killing of our unarmed youth, and the attempted murders of our people through mass and political imprisonment, medical neglect, parole denial, and solitary confinement,” added Mr. Abdulmumit.
