FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

420 Gathering To Be Held In Victoria Park

On Monday, April 20th, 2015, a group of concerned citizens will gather in Victoria Park to demonstrate in support of drug policy reform in Canada.

An undeniable body of evidence now suggests that the current law-enforcement approach to cannabis is ineffective to the point of being counterproductive. Several states and nations have already abolished the prohibition of cannabis, producing measurable social and economic benefits. Unfortunately, the government of Canada’s contempt for evidence, and inaction on policy reform leaves our nation fighting a war on drugs that it cannot win, making victims of otherwise-innocent people.

We therefore join with countless others in cities across Canada to publicly gather and challenge the current laws. People of all walks of life are invited to come in peace, solidarity, and mutual respect at this family-friendly event. Some will bring musical instruments, snacks, and games for a spring day in the park. Speeches will begin around 4pm, followed by the traditional countdown to 4:20.

We ask the City of London’s tolerance for this gathering, and encourage the London Police Service to follow the example of other cities. The zero-tolerance strategy of the past five years is costly, unnecessary, and increases risk to public safety. The end of prohibition is inevitable; continued heavy-handed enforcement does only further harm.
