Montreal – At 1:00 this afternoon, the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition will deliver our youth platform to Liberal party leader Michael Ignatieff, at a meeting between Ignatieff and Montreal youth. Deliveries will be happening tomorrow in Toronto, Ottawa and Victoria to the home of Jack Layton, to 24 Sussex Dr and to Green Party leader Elizabeth May. The platform will also be forwarded to the offices and emails of all the candidates.

Made up of five core demands, the platform is a call for each leader to commit to work with young people across Canada in creating solutions to climate crisis.

“We are calling on the party leaders to go beyond lip-service and token gestures,” said Cameron Fenton, National Director of the CYCC. “Our generation will inherit either the successes or the failures of today’s politicians.”

Perhaps most importantly, youth are calling for their inclusion in decision making, without which these crucial issues are will continue to be pushed to the back burner, as politicians focus on shortsighted policies for political advantage.

"Canada is well on its way to joining communities around the world who are feeling the consequences of droughts, floods, and extreme weather," explained Amara Possian, a Volunteer Coordinator for the CYCC who met with Ignatieff, "With this platform, the youth of this country are uniting to make clear that regardless of who is elected on May 2nd, a safe and just future is the only choice we will accept.”

Copies of the youth platform will be made available to interested journalists later today.
