Switching your sustainership from PayPal to direct deposit (voided cheque)

Like many groups, we were very concerned when we heard about PayPal shutting down Wikileaks' account. While PayPal states that the decision was based on Wikileaks violating their terms of agreement, the move - to us and many others - feels politically motivated and pre-emptive.

As with many other member-funded organisations, though, we have come to rely on PayPal for a significant number of transactions. To express our disagreement with PayPal's decision over Wikileaks, we are encouraging our members to stop paying their recurring monthly payments via PayPal and to instead switch to paying by direct deposit, using a void cheque.

By doing so, not only will you be helping to put pressure on PayPal to change it's stance on Wikileaks, but more of your money will be going directly to the Media Co-op and The Dominion, since we won't be charged PayPal's user fees.

Here's how it works:

Take one of your personal cheques and follow these easy steps:
  1. Under the fields for "Pay to the order of" and "Amount" write VOID
  2. Under "memo," write: Dominion Newspaper Co-op: $20/month (or any other amount you'd like to give), and the date you would like it to begin (ie, Jan. 1, 2011)
  3. Sign on the signature line
  4. Send it to us at: The Dominion, PO Box 741, Station H, Montreal, QC, H3G 2M7

You can also send us a voided cheque with a separate sheet of paper with all the other information listed on it.

Once we receive your cheque, we will email you to let you know you can cancel your recurring PayPal transactions. In order to avoid an interruption in service, please do not cancel your recurring PayPal transactions until you hear from us.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at membership@mediacoop.ca.

Thank you!
