On the 20th Anniversary of Oka

Ellen Gabriel joined the members of her community of Kanehsatà:ke in March 1990 as they erected barricades to protect The Pines from the expansion of a golf course in the municipality of Oka. She was chosen by the People of the Longhouse and then by her community to be a spokesperson for them during the 1990 Oka Crisis.
For over 10 years Niocan Inc. has been pursuing the development of an underground niobium mine in southern Quebec near the town of Oka. Numerous concerns have been raised by the local communities including the residents of Oka and the Mohawk of Kanesatake. The Mohawk have aboriginal treaty rights to the area, which are part of an unsettled land claim.

On July 11, 2010, 4 buses full of people from Montreal as well as many others from the community of Kanesatà:ke and other areas marched to acknowledge the 20 years that have passed since the event that Canadians know as the "Oka Crisis." Land claims battles are still raging, as are struggles for basic human respect, even 20 years after the highest profile armed stand-off between Mohawk and Canadian nations.
