Pro-Choicers Loud and Proud

Pro-choicers respond to the pro-life demonstrations in Sudbury

Pro-choicers faced off against pro-lifers last week in front of Laurentian Hospital on Paris St in Sudbury.

The pro-lifers have been holding signs at the spot, proclaiming that “God’s Choice is Life” and “Life Begins at Conception.”

The pro-choice contingent mobilized in response to the campaign, beginning with a march from Laurentian University to the hospital site. Their signs read, “Keep Your Rosaries off my Ovaries” and “I thank my doctor for risking his life to provide my abortion.”

While the pro-choice rally attracted only a couple of dozen of supporters, the passers-by echoed gratitude for their presence. “Right on, girls! Thanks for being out here!” shouted one woman as she drove past.

Laurel O’Gorman, a graduate student and mother of two expressed that she was there “because access to abortion has been in decline,” and cited the Harper Government strategy for defunding abortion under the guise of the Maternal Health Initiative at last year’s G20 meetings.

While access to safe abortion is eroding, O’Gorman also points to the fact that abortions are not accessible in many communities; “technically, abortions are free and legal, but there is only one clinic in Sudbury, and no clinic north of here that I am aware of. Access is only free and legal when clinics exist.”

Darryl Shandro also expressed the need for people to re-invigorate pro-choice efforts: “we need to get back out there because our access to safe abortion is once again coming under attack.”

“We are creating a safe environment here for people to come out, and we need to stand together to keep this medically sound procedure available. I am past the age where I can have children, but I want to protect this freedom for future generations of women.”

The act apparently inspired two young people to hold signs of their own last Monday. One of the signs read, “Former Fetus for Choice.”

There is no indication how long the pro-lifers intend to continue their daily demonstrations.
