A Surreal Day At The Senate

The Twitter account of US Republican Senator Jim Inhofe put on a delightful show for those who decided to use social media to follow today's historical debate in the US summit over whether or not climate change is real.

The bill, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse's Bill 29, 'That climate change is real and not a hoax.', passed 98-1 with Republican Senator Roger Wicker as the lone vote against.

Inhofe's initial Twitter statement, on his way in to vote, was a request for "Senators - join me in voting YES on Whitehouse's amdmnt saying climate change is a hoax, bc it is. I'll address my vote in floor speech soon".

This was followed by a steady stream of sarcastic responses from many people watching the account, including myself.

Inhofe was expected to vote no, but seemed to be confused about the question.

Then the message changed after that, and there were several twitter posts saying that climate change was real, and then he posted the video of his confusing presentation to the Senate explaining why his total about-face shift in position was not at all an about-face shift in position. His position seems to be that climate change is real, but that it is not caused by human activity.

Enjoy.
