CkUT's OTH: Harper's Bid to Dismantle the Canadian Wheat Board

CKUT's OTH look into the government's plan to dismantle the Canadian Wheat Board.
Prof. Barney, who is presently involved in research project on the politics of grain-handling
on the Canadian prairies, explains the economics behind the Canadian Wheat Board.
Then, we talk to Friends of the Canadian Wheat Board, namely Alberta farmer
Laurence Nicholson and Saskatchewan farmer Stewart Wells about plans to launch a class action
lawsuit against the Canadian government if it dismantles the Canadian Wheat board.

This is the statement from the Friends of the Canadian Wheat Board website:

"ON THURSDAY DEC 15, 2011, THE SENATE PASSED BILL C-18 WITHOUT ANY AMENDMENTS.  IT IS CLEAR TO US THAT PRIME MINISER STEPHEN HARPER HAS WIPPED THE SENATE AS WELL AS THE HOUSE.

This should concern all Canadian Citizens.  The senate is supposed to be the house of "sober second thought" yet no sober second thought has occurred.  There are many Senators and MP's that have fought with us and heard from us, even some on the Conservative side that said they would NOT support this bill but then DID.  Our government needs to be heald accountable.

On December 6, 2011 the Friends of the CWB WON a court battle which made clear that implementing Bill C-18 without the consent of farmers (Section 47.1 of the CWB Act) was unlawful.   The government and Ag Minister Ritz has decided to appeal the decision rather than confronting farmers with the truth.
