Saskatoon Rallies for Trans Rights

SASKATOON—On Saturday, May 4, Saskatoon residents gathered for a peaceful demonstration outside Jenny's Bridal Boutique to show support for Rohit Singh and for transgender rights in Saskatchewan. Singh, a transgender woman, had visited the boutique to try on dresses in preparation for her wedding, but faced discrimination from the shop owner.

The Gender Equality Society of Saskatchewan invites you to a peaceful show of support for Rohit Singh and for the Human Rights of Transgender people of Saskatchewan.

On May 2, 2013, CBC News reported a story about a transgender woman who was refused service at a Saskatoon bridal shop. It was reported by Ms Singh that the shop owner "don't allow men to wear dresses here." Rohit's response was that she is "not a man, I'm transgender."

The Transgender Community faces extreme levels of discrimination and harassment in Saskatchewan in all aspects of society, for simply being who they are. No one should have to face discrimination for any aspect of their identity.

The Gender Equality Society of Saskatchewan calls on all supporters of the Transgender Community to a peaceful show of support for Rohit Singh and to voice the need for Human Rights protection on the basis of gender identity and gender expression for all people of Saskatchewan.
