S-CAP is a direct-action anti-poverty organization based in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. We provide direct-action support work assisting individuals in their struggles with welfare and ODSP, housing, employers, and others who deny people what they are entitled to in order to meet their needs. In addition, we mount campaigns against and support educational work about regressive government policies as they affect working people and people living in poverty. We believe in the power of people to organize themselves.

Monday, March 4: Screening of Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin and the Farm Midwives

Time: 7pm
Location: Rainbow Cinemas, 40 Elm Street, Sudbury
Cost: $10

Trailer: http://vimeo.com/birthstorymovie/birthstorymovie

Synopsis: The feature-length documentary BIRTH STORY: INA MAY GASKIN & THE FARM MIDWIVES tells the story of counterculture heroine Ina May Gaskin and her spirited friends, who began delivering each other’s babies in 1970, on a caravan of hippie school buses, headed to a patch of rural Tennessee land. With Ina May as their leader, the women taught themselves midwifery from the ground up, and, with their families, founded an entirely communal, agricultural society called The Farm. They grew their own food, built their own houses, published their own books, and, as word of their social experiment spread, created a model of care for women and babies that changed a generation’s approach to childbirth.

The screening of this beautiful film is being put on in collaboration with the Laurentian Association of Midwifery Students. This is a one time only screening of the film in Sudbury, and a chance for you to come celebrate women, birth and babies! After the screening, please join us for a post screening chat/party at Pesto's Restaurant in the Radisson Hotel (connected to the Rainbow Center).

Ticket Price: $10 general admission

Film Length: 93 minutes

Doors open at 6:30 pm. Movie starts at 7:00 pm.

Tickets can be purchased at the door, or in advance by contacting us on this event page. If you would like to purchase your tickets in advance, just leave us a little note, and we'll contact you via personal message. There are only 100 tickets being sold to this event. Don't miss out on seeing this one of a kind documentary!

Friday, March 8: Science Unmuzzled

Time: 7pm
Location: Fraser Auditorium, Laurentian University

Here’s an event that you just don’t want to miss. It’s contentious, it’s heated, and it’s definitely going to be a night never to forget...

Come hear from real live representatives from science, media, and parliament, and get their expert opinions on the current status of science in Canada and the access to information. There are many conflicting opinions already, and we at the Biology Society are looking to the community to sort some questions out…

Is there a “war on science”?

Are Canadian scientists being muzzled?

Who owns the information generated by public money and what happens to it?

Why are academics within the scientific community crying foul?

Are all of these negative claims just a big sham put on by the crazy lefty environmentalists who hate our economy?

Come contribute to the discussion Friday March 8th, 7pm at Laurentian University in the Fraser auditorium to figure out what is really going on with the state of science in Canada.

Speakers include:

Dr. John Gunn
Dr. Dave Pearson
Glenn Thibeault
Erik White

Moderated by:

Franco Mariotti

Tickets are available at the Students General Association(SGA) at Laurentian University, or you can email biosoc@laurentian.ca to find a ticket retailer nearest to you!

"Access Without Fear Policies Pass at Toronto City Hall" by No One Is Illegal
(Originally published here: http://toronto.nooneisillegal.org/node/779)

Today, after a marathon nail-biting debate, Toronto City Hall strengthened its promise to provide services to residents without full immigration status or all their immigration documents. Read the exact motion here (http://app.toronto.ca/tmmis/viewAgendaItemHistory.do?item=2013.CD18.5).

You called, wrote, met, and pressured your Councillors and they were forced to listen. The first step is complete, and we have a new mission for you.

We need you to go out and make sure that Toronto services are now actually accessible. Sign up here (http://eepurl.com/tzEq9) and we will get in touch with you on exactly how. There is a lot of work still to be done, and together we will make it happen.

City Hall instructed Chris Brillinger, Executive Director, Social Development, Finance and Administration to put together a report on how to improve access to services without fear including training, a complaints protocol and a communications blitz by September 2013.

That means we need to spend the next six months ensuring the right recommendations get on this report and that these recommendations actually pass at City Hall after that.

Many services like housing, healthcare, welfare, labour protections, safety from police brutality childcare, disability services, and immigration status are managed by the province and the federal government. The City will be writing to the governments of Ontario and Canada to demand that they to step up. Get in touch with us and help us write up the recommendations that need to go in to these letters. We are looking for people from other cities in Ontario to pass similar policies, if you are interested, get in touch. We are at solidaritycitytoronto@gmail.com

"We Want Northern Chicken" by Eat Local Sudbury

On Feb 1st launched the We Want Northern Chicken Campaign to raise awareness about chicken production regulation in Ontario and more importantly the North.

Northern Ontario farmers faces different challenges than those in Southern Ontario. Distance, lack of infrastructure and resulting higher cost make it harder for Northern farmers to compete.

Chicken farmers in Northern Ontario are producing under 0.5% of our peoples’ chicken consumption each year. That’s half the amount that ONE average chicken farmer in the South produces, and only enough local chicken for one day a year!

Eat Local Sudbury has decided to carry Southern Ontario quota chicken from an independent poultry farmer in our store. Each time someone purchases a piece of chicken they will be asked to sign a postcard addressed to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural affairs, expressing their desire to see changes to the supply management system in support of farmers, specifically in Northern Ontario.

We will work with Sustain and the Practical Farmers, to support and promote simultaneously all the campaigns about the chicken supply management system in Ontario.

We are looking for other partners across the province to support and promote the campaign. There are many ways to be involved, but we would like to suggest the following:

·         Order We Want Northern Chicken Postcards from us to have people in your communities sign onto the campaign

·         Hand out We Want Northern Chicken brochures

·         Educate yourself and others about the supply management system in Ontario, and challenges for small farmers through our website (http://www.eatlocalsudbury.com/#!we-want-northern-chicken/cy18), flockingoptions.ca and practicalfarmers.ca

·         Spread the word to your media contacts about our campaign

·         “Like” our Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/We-Want-Northern-Chicken/338881892893015)  and follow us on Twitter (https://twitter.com/eatlocalsudbury) to engage daily in the conversation

·         Sign the petition on flockingoptions.ca

And most of all : Buy Chicken and Support Change at Eat Local Sudbury.

If you know if any other partners, organizations or interested parties that should involved in the campaign, please spread the word.

If you have any ideas, questions or inquiries, please direct them to chicken@eatlocalsudbury.com.
