'The Canadian Dream,' directed by the daughter of a former farm worker who sued the farm that forced him to use pesticides without proper protection, premiered at Toronto's Hot Docs festival on April 26

While thousands of Mexicans continue seeking the so-called “Canadian dream” for a better life — despite visa requirements being reinstated in February — former Leamington farm worker Alberto Moreno defines it as an "illusion."

Solidarity spreads fast. As the wave of student encampments has grown on postsecondary campuses across the United States, in protest of academia’s collusion with Israeli apartheid and its ongoing war in Gaza, students at McGill and Concordia Universities have followed suit. On Saturday, April 27, they erected camps on the grounds of McGill in downtown Montreal.

University of Toronto declines to divest from pro-Israel institutions

Pro-Palestinian student-organizers who staged a 30-hour occupation say they know this will be a long-haul fight, citing the long struggle in the 1980s and ’90s to get the institution to divest from apartheid South Africa and in the 2010s to divest from fossil fuel companies

Moving Beyond Electoral Politics and the Sedative of Empathy

A recent op-ed by Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow reminds us that just as we must divest from companies complicit in the ongoing genocide and apartheid, we must divest ourselves from governments and nation-states that are ultimately projects of empire.

“A slaughter isn’t a slaughter if those being slaughtered are at fault, if they’ve been quietly and effectively dehumanized — in the media, through policy — for years,” writes Palestinian-American writer, professor, and psychologist Hala Alyan. “If nobody is a civilian, nobody can be a victim.”

As I reported recently, the mayor and council for the City of Surrey have been so desperate to keep Palestine solidarity voices from speaking at council meetings in an effort to get the city to vote on a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, that they have taken to locking all residents out of council meetings. They have recently gone so far as setting up new riot fencing to keep the public from even coming within several meters of city hall.

Anti-Palestinian racism permeates Canadian institutions, critics say

What is anti-Palestinian racism?

Referring to pre-1948 Palestine as a “crappy piece of land with nothing on it” — as former BC NDP Minister of Postsecondary Education Selina Robinson recently did — is not just a sign of ignorance but an expression of the anti-Palestinian racism (APR) that critics say runs deep within our institutions and across political party lines.
